What Is a Felony?

In Connecticut, criminal offenses are classified as felonies punishable by imprisonment for over a year or misdemeanors that can be punishable by prison time for not more than a year. Although various crimes can be charged as a felony, some of the more common ones tend to include kidnappings, murder, rape, aggravated assault, and home invasions.

Felony Classifications

Felonies are often classified according to the severity of the crime and split into the following: Capital felonies, Class A, Class B, Class C, and Class D felonies, or they may remain unclassified. If the felony remains unclassified, the sentence will depend on the criminal statute.

For instance, Class A felony convictions are often the most severe crimes in Connecticut after murder with special circumstances and carry a minimum prison sentence of 10 to 25 years and possible fines of $20,000. In comparison, Class D felonies carry a punishment of one to five years in prison and a possible fine of $10,000.
